North Cyprus Cats and Dogs - ear mites

Post by Admin » Tue Feb 27, 2018 5:33 pm

Ear mites are tiny, eight-legged parasites which live in the ears of animals, they are almost invisible to the human eye. They are more common in outdoor cats but affect both cats and dogs in North Cyprus. They are passed from pet to pet in casual contact.

Ear mites make your pet's ears itch. This is very uncomfortable for your pet which will shake its head and/or scratch its ears to try and ease the irritation. This can rupture blood vessels in your pet's ear flap and the bleeding can cause swelling which is very painful for your pet.

If left untreated, ear mites can cause more serious ear and/or skin infections with hair loss, scratches and dermatitis around the ears.

If you notice that your pet is excessively shaking its head and/or repeatedly scratching its ears and there is crumbly, dark debris/residue in your pet's ear canal, it's likely that your pet is infected with ear mites.

If you are not sure, a quick visit to your North Cyprus vet will settle your mind. If the diagnosis is an ear mite infestation, your vet will prescribe medication that should clear up the problem within a ten day period.

If you have a pet with ear mites, wash their bedding with hot soapy water and spray the environment with a safe, flea-type insecticide (consult a professional for advice with this).

As with most pet health issues, prevention is better than cure - monthly medication can be administered to prevent your pet from catching ear mites.

You will need to give your vet a complete history of your pet's health and symptoms, as well as whether your pets have regular contact with other animals. Your vet will perform a complete physical exam on your pet, including standard lab tests, such as a chemical blood profile, a complete blood count, a urinalysis and an electrolyte panel, just to be sure that your dog does not have any other diseases.
